Unseen Strengths: Diverse Expressions of Disability

To commemorate Disability Pride Month, we created a series "Unseen Strengths: Diverse Expressions of Disability" to enhance visibility and deepen understanding of the disability community's experiences. Featuring the compelling photography of Steven H. Begleiter and Janine Wiedel, their powerful imagery from settings as varied as Missoula, Montana and London, UK not only reflects the lived realities of individuals facing accessibility challenges but also the broader dialogues and movements shaping disability rights today.

Steven H. Begleiter, a renowned photographer and adjunct professor based in Denver, has captured critical social issues through his lens, notably in his "Every Woman Matters" project in Missoula, Montana, highlighting accessibility challenges for disabled women in cancer screenings.

This work led to the "Visitation" project, which through powerful imagery, advocated for economically viable modifications in home construction to improve accessibility, aiming to influence both builders and homeowners about the importance of inclusive housing designs.

Janine Wiedel, a documentary photographer active since the 1960s, has extensively documented the struggles of marginalized communities. Her pivotal "The Hardest Hit" March series captures a significant protest in London, where disabled individuals rallied against government cuts to benefits, vividly showcasing their fight for independence and the critical role of advocacy in societal change.
