DEMOCRACY UNDER FIRE: Executive Order Threatens Press Freedom and Legal Rights

ImageRights, a proud member of the Digital Media Licensing Association (DMLA), stands in solidarity with over 60 media organizations in supporting a powerful amicus brief that challenges an alarming executive order.

The amicus brief—led by The Intercept's Press Freedom Defense Fund and the Freedom of the Press Foundation—opposes sanctions placed on the law firm Perkins Coie for representing administration critics and defending voting rights. The brief warns that “the President seeks the simultaneous power to wield the legal system against those who oppose his policies or reveal his administration’s unlawful or unethical acts—who, in many cases, have been members of the press—and then deny them access to the system built to defend their rights.

Protecting press freedom and legal access doesn't just impact journalists – it impacts all Americans. When journalists cannot secure proper legal representation, their ability to serve as watchdogs is compromised, ultimately undermining the informed citizenry essential to a functioning democracy.
